painting of the week

she removed her widows garments and covered herself with a veil,
wrapped herself and sat in an open place (Tamar)
48" X 24"; 2008

usually $600... this week $480

covering #1

Frail. Old. Tattered. Frumpy. Worn. Barely holding it together.

I am thinking here about Hosea's wife, Gomer, once a prostitute but redeemed by God through Hosea as a metaphor of God's love to Israel. She left. He rescued her. She left again. He brought her home... so often we leave what is new and return to what we know, our past, what is comfortable- and although this may seem odd to us- that she would return to something we think of as a horrible experience.... we do the same.

If you have never read Francine Rivers book, Redeeming Love, you need to! and for those of you who have, you know her story well. Her writing has been a constant inspiration to my work inspired by the Women of the Bible and as I was thinking about Spills and Coverings, my new series, I cannot get this "Angel" out of my mind... there will be other spills and coverings in this series inspired by this love story, that is for sure.

trying to make a covering with her past, but fragile and transparent
hanging in the balance

PAINTING OF THE WEEK!

for a few weeks,
I am going to do a PAINTING OF THE WEEK
with a lower price on that piece for that week only.

BRAVE
$65

here it is at Memphis Theological Seminary in my solo show their earlier this Spring
"A Common Thread"

email me at deeannrieves@gmail.com for inquiries

also see the next post "RE-working old work"
to see two other pieces that have new low prices

RE-working old pieces

the first two pieces are FOR SALE: major discount!

READ MORE below to find out why :) one of a time sale!

all of these pieces are acrylic and mixed media on cut wood panelwhich means, they are framed like a normal painting with a rectangular shape frame on the back
and eye hooks and wire(the one above doesn't have eyehooks, but the others do)the painting is cut masonite wood,
shaped exactly how you see it in the image, sturdy and contemporary

it appears to float off the wall because of frame on the back and is ready to hang!
Moonlight Sonata
$160

40" X 36", 2007
(was $350)

WHY THEY ARE ON SALE:
so I still love some of my pieces that I made a long time ago, but I mainly love the cut panel... SO... I am going to completely RE-work these two pieces and paint over them and destroy them into something new and beautiful UNLESS someone writes ASAP to inform me that they want to buy it! haha.. not sure if that is unprofessional to say, but to me its life as an artist. I am moving forward and love these panels but the images unfortunately don't work with my new series...

Changing
$300
55" X 60", 2007
(was $450)

THIS IS AN AMAZING DEAL for a painting this size
it is a very contemporary piece

*****************
SO.......... write me ASAP at deeannrieves@gmail.com if you want to buy
because they are disappearing into something new very soon!
*****************

here is one that I am currently re-working (not for sale yet):

OLD (above)

NEW (above)

one of my professors at MCA, Susan Maakestad, always told us in class that if we needed to move forward with a piece but werent sure how (and this applies perfectly to reworking an old piece that seems finished) is to do something DRASTIC that you would normally NEVER do to the piece, leave it and then when you come back, you will have to resolve that and it will help you move on with the piece and show you where to go next!

so I added lime green and cut holes in a figurative painting right through the figure and the background, and I tore some of the collage items off the back... we will see how it transforms

cozy new studio

I have begun a new series, "Spills and Coverings"
my new studio in our apartment in Atlanta, not sure the pictures do it justice,
its really quite spacious and a perfect spot for me to work

"She was not forgotten" a piece inspired by Hagar

spill, stain

when I unloaded my car from my last trip, I was sitting paintings EVERYWHERE and stacked these, right before I moved them I realized together they made some interesting shapes and movement
both pieces are part of the series, but not like this. haha

a lot of my inspiration has come from these tiny leaves that have been eaten away by bugs or the weather or something, I picked them up last summer and pressed them, so I decided to use a couple of the actual leaves on these two small circular wood pieces I found at my granddads

this is a study for a piece I want to do about Eve, it is going to be called "My Covering" it will be mostly fabric and thread, not painted on panel

not sure where either of these are going conceptually, but I like them...

this one is going to be a series of three, broken pieces of ceramic tiles
broken pieces spilling and falling
